Different colors of Daruma dolls are on sale at Takahata Fudoson Temple in Hino City, Western Suburbs of Tokyo, on January 28, 2024. Visitors gather to buy Daruma dolls (without pupils painted on their eyes), seeking good luck during the year. People color in one pupil when a wish is made, or a goal is set, and when the wish comes true, or the goal is achieved, they fill in the other pupil. At the end of the year, used Daruma dolls are returned to the temple to be burned. Daruma (Boddhidharma), an Indian Buddhist, traveled to China and reportedly engaged in nine years of meditation, during which he is believed to have lost his arms and legs.
