A taxi displays the new base fare for Tokyo cabs on January 31, 2017, Tokyo, Japan. The base taxi fare in the capital and for the two connected cities of Musashino and Mitaka was cut by over 40% from 730 JPY for the first two kilometres to 410 JPY for the first 1052m (a reduction from approximately USD 6.43 to USD 3.61). According to government data the new system means that short journeys under 6.5km should be cheaper than before, and it is hoped that this will make it easier for the elderly and foreign visitors to use taxi-cabs.
