  • October 22, 2019, Tokyo, Japan - A newspaper staff hands out copies of an extra edition reporting that Japan's new Emperor Naruhito has officially proclaimed his enthronement in a ritual-bound ceremony. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, other royals and head of state from more than 180 countries. Naruhito is the first Japanese emperor born after World War II.

Japan's new emperor Naruhito formally ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne, today May 1st, a day after his father Akihito abdicated. This year, the Japanese doll maker ''Kyugetsu'' unveiled a set of hina dolls modeled after Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako, figure skater Rika Kihira (bottom R) and shogi player Sota Fujii (bottom L). The traditional dolls are used to celebrate Hinamatsuri or Girl's Day in Japan on March 3rd.
